The Friday Night Musical Interlude is an experiment to determine whether it is possible to use Facebook as an entertainment medium. It is also one of my favorite hobbies.
It started innocently enough when I was bored after posting another series of political articles on a popular local Facebook fan page. I have always loved 70’s rock and consider myself a professional music consumer rather than a musician. You see, I can’t play a lick. However, I know what I like and when I find something that interests me, I like to share it. In fact, I’ve been doing that for years on the radio with monthly appearances on a local radio station. I also like to write as evidenced by this blog.
So, where were we? Oh yeah, I was bored and I had long ago come to loath Facebook both as time-waster and because I didn’t really see the point in knowing what all my friends had for dinner or where they had been and I really didn’t care to know why their lives were so much better than mine. While I’ve been in the public eye for a long time and I’ve never backed away from telling stories about my life, my day to day activities have generally been off-limits for public consumption. It’s just not my thing.
So there, I am, a frustrated writer and music enthusiast trying to figure out how to make something that seemed very boring to me, more interesting. So, I went over to YouTube and found some live performance music videos and I posted them just for fun. Then, the next week, I did it again. I continued for about a month and then I discovered that the best time for me to post these videos was Friday because it was a very relaxing way to spend an hour or two on Friday nights.
Fast forward about six months. I had started calling these collections of music videos the Friday Night Musical Interlude because an Interlude is something that comes between something else. The musical part of the name was obvious as was the Friday Night bit. My time as editor of the political fan page was drawing to an end and I asked if the new editor wanted to take over the Friday Night Musical Interlude and he said, “Why would I? I don’t know anything about music.” So, I decided to take the idea and continue posting it on my personal Facebook page because I really enjoyed the research. I enjoyed the moment of discovery when I found a really rare video and I started to create longer sets of videos and began creating entire shows featuring a single artist or a specific genre or even collections of songs about specific things.
I created a simple logo for the posts and I began to change my Facebook image when the show started and then change it back when the show ended in order to give the “viewers” some cues about the show. Then my best friend from high school, Gayle Walls, who is now a graphic artist created the image that you see at the top of this page and I knew that it wouldn’t be long before I created a fan page specifically dedicated to the love of music and Friday Night Musical Interludes.
Now, I invite you to become a friend of the page and share the posts with others. If you don’t like what we are playing right now, hang on, in a few minutes, we’ll play something you do like!
